Fred has a great post up today in response to the email sent out by Jason Calacanis over the weekend titled “(The) Startup Depression”. My takeaway from both is that there’s something fundamental to the way people start and grow businesses that needs to be there from the very beginning. I’ve always liked thinking of this as the founding DNA. A perfect helix combining founders individual mindsets, risk tolerances, design aesthetic, market intelligence and professional experiences into one truly unique company.
Specific to the current situation, I think its an opportunity for entrepreneurs to start fresh with a lean and agile approach to how they grow their businesses. Its an opportunity to reset and embark on new ventures with founding DNA tuned to a harsh economic climate and an eye towards delivering valuable services to users (instead of simply pursuing fundable or flippable ideas). I think we’re on the cusp of seeing some truly disruptive and dynamic business emerge from these difficult times and that this “depression” will be a net postitive for our collective entrepreneurial gene pool.
